Leeman Road was the site of the first branch school in York, formed in 1891. A Social Club followed around 1895, and women's and children's classes a year later. In 1899, a Sick Club was also started for scholars. Its attendance figures were 93 men and 34 women in 1902. For the period 1908 to 1925, Quaker worship, with a full Preparative Meeting, was held at the school. The school closed around 1928 and its property taken over by trustees. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
